emini North – a Seven-Nation Collaboration, Including Canada's NRC
The 673-tonne, 46-metre tall steel observatory dome on the Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii is a scientific fortress. It's built to withstand hurricane-force winds. And at 4200-metres above sea level the average temperature is 0 ºC, so the dome is often ice covered. But the site's low atmospheric turbulence provides the world's best stargazing conditions. The dome was built by Vancouver's AMEC Dynamic Structures, the world's premier observatory dome builder and a frequent NRC collaborator. This long-exposure night shot produced star trails as Earth rotates about its axis.

Veil Nebula
Work the controls of the Plaskett telescope in the historic Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Meet an astronomer, perhaps a world-renowned asteroid hunter or our resident astronomical renaissance man. Weather permitting, explore the wonders of the night sky with one of our many telescopes. Staff will be on hand to guide you through the Universe.
